1. Volver a hablar sin sonar “de libro”Reconnect without sounding like a textbook

Use these when you want to know what’s been going on in someone’s life and give them room for a longer answer.

  1. 1

    ¿Cómo te ha ido?

How have you been? / How have things been going?

No pregunta solo cómo estás ahora.

It doesn’t just ask how you are right now. It asks how things have gone over a stretch of time.

“Hace mucho que no hablamos. ¿Cómo te ha ido?”

“We haven’t talked in a while. How have you been?”

  2. 2

    ¿Qué me cuentas?

What’s new? / What have you been up to?

It invites the other person to share news. It’s open, so it can lead to work, family, travel, plans or anything else.

“¡Hace semanas que no te veo! ¿Qué me cuentas?”

“I haven’t seen you in weeks! What’s new?”

  3. 3

    ¿En qué andas últimamente?

What have you been up to lately?

Andar aquí no significa “to walk”.

Andar here doesn’t mean “to walk”. It asks what projects, activities or situations are taking up their time lately.

“¿En qué andas últimamente? ¿Sigues con el proyecto nuevo?”

“What have you been up to lately? Are you still working on the new project?”

2. Preguntar qué pasó despuésAsk what happened next

A natural conversation doesn’t always start from zero. Often you pick up something the other person told you before.

  1. 4

  2. 5

    ¿Qué pasó al final con…?

So what happened in the end with…?

  3. 6

    ¿En qué quedó lo de…?
